Good Samaritan Nursing Home Information Meeting

Posted 1/21/2013
By: Bill Hansen

It has been two months since the Good Samaritan Society announced that it planned to discontinue their ownership of the Centerville nursing home. When they made their announcement they gave the Centerville Community about 60 days to decide if the City or a local non-profit would want to accept their donation of the facility.

Good Sam's decision was based on a history of uncertain census numbers and the immediate need of installing a fire sprinkler system, which must be complete by August 13th, 2013.

The census numbers were running in the low 20's in 2011. It has recently increased to almost 40 residents, which is at profitable level.

The Centerville Development Corporation has been working with the South Eastern Council of Governments (SECOG) to identify funding sources for the sprinkler system. On December 27th, they approved a loan of $125,000 for that purpose. We do not have a firm bid on the sprinkler system yet. We have someone working on getting that for us. We are considering other options to raise additional money if the sprinkler system costs exceed $125,000.

We have explored several options regarding ownership and operations of the facility. We asked Good Sam to reconsider their decision to leave if we would pay for the sprinkler system. We approached Pioneer Memorial Hospital, Avera, and Mission Healthcare and asked them if they would consider owning or operating the nursing home. None of these organizations were willing to assume the risk of ownership or operating the facility.

It became clear that if we want to keep a nursing home in Centerville, we need to acquire the facility and hire a management service to operate it for us. We have evaluated our options and are working toward developing a management agreement with Chad Stroschein of Caring Professionals, Inc. He has a successful record of managing rural nursing homes. In my discussion with owners and board members of nursing homes he currently manages, I found that they are similar size to Centerville's and they have experienced a successful turn-around in profitability since he took over the management duties. I plan to visit some of these facilities in the near future.

The Centerville Development Corporation completed the acceptance of donation form with the Good Samaritan Society on January 9th. Good Sam will continue to operate the facility until at least April 10th.

We still have several issues to deal with before this transition is complete, but I believe we are heading in the right direction. Thank you to Mayor Brad Preheim, the City Council, the Centerville Development Corporation, the Good Samaritan staff, Lynne Keller Forbes of SECOG and the Centerville community for your ideas, support and encouragement. It shows that no challenge is too great if everyone works together.

I have provided a very brief description of our work over the past couple months. If you have more questions or want to know more about the nursing home status, please attend our informational meeting on Tuesday, January 22nd at 7 PM in the purple gym at the Centerville school.
